BDE 2010 - Light Logo

Back in April this year I worked with TAK! Design to create a logo and brand identity for British Dance Edition 2010, a bi-annual dance festival showcasing the freshest work within the British dance scene…

Online contemporary dance zine Article 19 were on the shoot to document our experimental logo production and created a really nice making of film…

TAK!’s creative director Dom Murphy and lead designer Vanessa Gorman proposed we capture the movement and energy of dance through a series of long exposure light paintings. With dancers performing whilst wearing or holding LED lights and batons. Thus creating a series of fluid and elegant light trails that truly represent the movement created by a contemporary dancer.

I’ve experimented with long exposure photography many times but this was the first time I’d been commissioned to specifically shoot long exposure light paintings and definitely the first photographic logo I’d ever been asked to create. It’s pretty exciting stuff when the photography becomes such an integral part of the brand identity!

After working out my ISO and aperture settings it was really a case of timing and working closely with the choreographer and dancers to decide on which movements worked best. It’s not an exact science but certain timings and movements did lend themselves to a particular shapes of light.

By the end of the shoot we came away with an array of stunning and energetic images… Each time we went back to the screen the images surprised and wowed everyone! It was a really fun shoot!
