Here + Now + The Future
A selection of Andy Warhol’s films ‘63 - ‘68, including his infamous ‘Screen Tests’, portraits featuring the likes of Lou Reed and Edie Sedgewick are currently on show in the Ikon Eastside gallery, Digbeth, Birmingham. The show opened back on 4th September and runs until 19th October.
To celebrate this and the closing party of the Ikon Eastide Gallery on 31st October, artist Lucienne Cole has devised an evening of music, projections and performance that pays an affectionate homage to Warhol, ‘The Exploding Plastic Inevitable’ and The Velvet Underground and Nico, “the most influential and unpopular band in history”.
I’ve been working with Lucienne to re-create some of the original Warhol Screen Tests such as the promo image above with Lucienne as Nico and the Cadbury Dairy Milk bar as a replacement for a Hershey bar.
A few screenshots from our recreated Screen Tests are shown below. Strange how using black and white and simple lighting immediately gives a retro and nostalgic feel even when shooting on video.
If you look on You Tube and search for Screen Tests you’ll find lots of imitations of Warhol’s work, which is much the same as what we’re doing.
On the night Lucienne will do a special performance with a band playing on glockenspiel’s with the projections behind them, there will be special Candy Girls giving out sweets to people, other Warhol related imagery will be projected plus there will be 60’s retro lighting the dance floor.
Entry is free apart from the fact that you’ll need to be dressed in black and white should you wish to attend the fun!
Pretty stoked with how the flyer came out..
More info on the Ikon Eastide Gallery closing party event can be found on the Ikon site.
I won’t actually be in attendance as I have a job down in London that night… So if you do go and have funtimes then please come back and comment here to let me know!
