Merman Day One!

Just back in after a couple of drinks and contemplation over the first day of shooting on Merman. I knew the shoot was ambitous but today that I realised that perhaps it was a little too ambitious… We started off really well, our first scene was in the fish market (image above) and was key in introducing the film to people.  This went really well, with much appreciated support from the array of friendly fish mongers.

The next few scenes were all in the Moseley Road Victorian Swimming pool.. On a sunny day the pool is well lit and suitable for filming. Unfortunately for us, today was pretty grim and as we weren’t allowed lights in the pool, chances of good exposure seemed slighlty slim. Saying that we had no choice but to shoot on regardless, in hope that the film would pick up enough detail to convey the shot. Add to this further troubles with our underwater housing, and you can see that today didn’t go as well as we might have hoped.

We still have the final couple of  sequences to shoot tomorrow, early morning there is a half hour slot for pool use.. that’s very tight.. but it’s our last chance before the deadline! So got to give it our best shot.  Just wish we had a dedicated underwater Super 8 camera, such as the Eumig Nautica… Oh well.. It’s just the nature of the unforgiving beast that is Straight 8!
